It's impossible to imagine England without its countryside.
The green fields, moors, woodlands and rolling hills have inspired generations of artists and poets and for many of us, the countryside is our escape from the pressures of everyday life - a place where we can relax and enjoy a moment's peace. For others, it is a place to live and work as well as to enjoy.
Yet rural England isn't something we can any longer take for granted. An area of countryside five times the size of Milton Keynes is currently at risk from development unless we can protect it by persuading the Government and local councils to change their policies.
CPRE - Campaign to Protect Rural England - is the most effective organisation that campaigns to protect the English countryside - effective because our passion for the countryside is matched by the energy and focus of our thinking.
We know that protecting the countryside cannot be achieved by good intentions alone. We need to campaign and press for practical measures: action to protect the Green Belt, to restrict development on greenfield sites, to meet the need for rural jobs and services, to protect country lanes and hedgerows, to improve rural public transport, and much more.
We also recognise that town and country depend on each other, and that protecting the countryside can - and must - go hand in hand with policies to regenerate our towns and cities.
In the Dorset Branch we have six local Groups who monitor nearly every planning application to ensure they comply with the Council’s Plan Policy and Design Guidelines.
