DORCHESTER STOP THE DROP
A  few residents formed this four years ago – as “disciples” of Bill Bryson and his “Stop the Drop” campaign, being fed up with the lack of public attention towards litter in the county town.

We’re not litter pickers, but activists who chase after those organizations such as landlords, property developers, councils, schools, rail operators, etc. who allow our town to become “soiled” by those who create litter of all sorts. We meet monthly, have the full support of WDDC Services management with whom we keep in close contact.  We feel we’ve been instrumental in :

Getting a promise from rail operators to replace plastic litter bags regularly destroyed by gulls with permanent bins.

Getting major “grot spots” in town cleaned up

Assisting the WI in organizing a litter pick

Securing funding from Dorset CPRE, Dorchester BID and Dorchester Town Council enabling us to sell and erect 86 wall mounted cigarette butt bins (made in the UK) to businesses though-out the centre of town.

We are also trying to introduce the initiative to Dorchester Primary Schools initiative, using the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust/CPRE programme, "How to Run a Whole School Litter Campaign".

CPRE-backed Stop the Drop group calls on Dorchester councillors to tackle litter problem.

It took three volunteers less than an hour in January 2012 to collect eight bags of rubbish from short sections on the approach roads to both rail stations
